Biographical Sketch
Dr. Surojit Das studied Microbiology at the University of Calcutta in India. He earned his PhD from the bacteriology division of the ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (NIRBI), Kolkata, India (formerly, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases). Following that, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Dept of Microbiology, Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, India. Dr. Das joined as the Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science & Management at Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, WB, India in Dec, 2018. He availed the fellowship from the Japan Science and Technology Agency, Okayama University, to attend the Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (Sakura Exchange Program in Science) in Japan in Sep, 2015. He was awarded the India Biosecurity Fellowship from the U.S. Department of State, Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction, in 2024. He has been selected as the Future Leaders Mentorship Fellowship (FLMF) mentor from the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) in 2025. He is serving as the member secretary of the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Vidyasagar University, following the DBT guidelines. He has completed research projects funded by national funding agencies. He has published more than 35 research articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He is engaged as a member and reviewer of several learned societies, including the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Elsevier, Frontiers, Springer Nature, BioMed Central, and the Microbiology Society. He is the associate editor of the International Journal of Advanced Medicine Sciences and Technology, published by Lattice Science Publication (LSP).
Academic Interest
For over one and a half decades, he has been continuing bacteriological research with a focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), epidemiological investigations, bacterial forensics, genomics, and molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases. He is interested in the molecular tracking and mapping of developing bacterial AMR, particularly transferable resistance and high-risk clones, applying the 'One Health' concept. He has expertise in designing and implementing PCR assays in multiplex format for rapid and economical detection of target genes, approaching in vitro diagnostics (IVD). Dr. Das is actively involved in the surveillance of clinical Gram-negative bacterial pathogens resistant to the highest-priority, critically important antimicrobials for human medicine, such as extended-spectrum cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, polymyxins, and carbapenems, across West Bengal, India. He is investigating the mechanisms of clonal transmission of antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. He is also involved in hospitals' antimicrobial and infection prevention stewardship by developing and deploying rapid molecular diagnostics. He has a keen interest in research on natural and biological antimicrobial compounds and agents.
