Biographical Sketch
Prof. Nilanjana Das Chatterjee is a Professor and Former Head of the Department of Geography at Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, India, where she has served for 18 years. Prior to joining Vidyasagar University, she was a faculty member at Haldia Government College under WBHES for four years. Her research expertise encompasses urban ecology, land-use planning, environmental and bio-geography, forest landscape ecology, ecosystem services, human–elephant conflict, folk and indigenous cultures, women-related issues, and sustainability studies. She emphasizes the application of geospatial analysis, GIS-based modelling, and remote sensing to assess ecological, urban, and social-environmental phenomena. Prof. Chatterjee has led and completed several major research projects funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), including studies on human–elephant conflict in Panchet Forest Division, Bankura, and Geospatial analysis of crime against women in West Bengal. She is currently the Principal Investigator of an ongoing ICSSR-funded project on Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Natural Resource Conservation among the Tribes of Jungle Mahal.
She has published more than 125 research articles in high-impact international journals and contributed to numerous collaborative research works published by Springer, Routledge, Elsevier, and Taylor & Francis. Her authored and edited books include Crime Prediction Using GIS and Statistical Modelling, Advanced GIS and Crime Analysis, Geo-Spatial Analysis of Forest Landscape for Wildlife Management, and Environmental Management and Sustainability in India: Case Studies from West
Bengal, among others. Under her mentorship, 12 Ph.D. scholars have completed their degrees, 8 are currently pursuing their research, and 9 M.Phil. scholars have completed dissertations. One scholar is perusing his Post Doctoral research under her guidance. She is recognized for her commitment to nurturing strong student–teacher relationships and fostering academic excellence.
Prof. Das Chatterjee holds memberships in several professional associations, including the Indian Science Congress Association, Indian National Cartographers Association, and IUCN-CEM, and has been honored with awards such as IUCN CEM (2018), Platinum Club Member, Vidyasagar University (2022 & 2023), and Golden Club Member, Vidyasagar University (2024). Her research is highly cited, with over 2700 citations, an h-index of 30, and an i10-index of 59 (Google Scholar). She continues to advance interdisciplinary research at the intersection of geography, environment, ecology, and social sciences, with a strong focus on practical applications for sustainable environmental management and urban resilience.
Academic Interest
Prof. Das Chatterjee’s research encompasses urban ecology, land-use planning, and environmental and bio-geography, with a focus on forest landscape ecology, ecosystem services, urbanization impacts and livability studies. She has conducted interdisciplinary studies on human-wildlife conflict, particularly human–elephant interactions, and developed habitat connectivity and mitigation strategies. Her work extensively employs geospatial and GIS-based modelling, including land-use regression, remote sensing, and spatial decision support for environmental and urban management. She also researches crime geography and social vulnerability, analyzing crime against women using GIS and statistical modelling, and investigates indigenous knowledge systems for natural resource conservation and sustainable environmental management.
